We are offering a paid Product Design Industry Placement in our South London studio for a student undertaking a placement year as part of their degree. You will work with the Seymourpowell design team across disciplines including Industrial Design, Transport, Digital and Product Experience.
About us
We are a design and innovation consultancy working across product, transport and experience design. We collaborate with organisations of all scales, from emerging ventures to global brands, helping them translate complex ideas into clear, meaningful solutions. Our work spans the full design process, from early insight through to concept development and delivery. We place a strong emphasis on clarity of thinking, creativity and impact.
What to expect
As a placement designer, you will work across all stages of the design process, from early research and insight development through to concept generation, prototyping and communication. You will be involved in a variety of projects across product, transport and experience design, contributing to both individual and team based work.
You will collaborate closely with designers from different disciplines, supporting the development of ideas and helping bring them to life through sketching, visualisation, CAD and storytelling. You will also gain exposure to how projects are structured and delivered within a studio environment, working alongside senior designers and creative leads.
Alongside project work, you will be part of the day to day life of the studio, contributing to the team, sharing ideas and learning through hands on experience. This placement is an opportunity to develop your skills, build confidence and gain a deeper understanding of design in practice.
What we are looking for
We are looking for someone who demonstrates clear thinking, curiosity and a strong point of view. You do not need to have everything figured out, but you should be able to communicate your ideas with clarity and intent.
You should show an ability to identify meaningful opportunities, simplify complexity and respond with thoughtful, well considered solutions. We value strong concepts over polished visuals, and we are particularly interested in how you approach a problem and structure your thinking.
A positive and proactive attitude is important, along with a willingness to learn, contribute and collaborate as part of a team. You should be comfortable working independently when needed, while remaining open to feedback and new perspectives.
A strong portfolio is important and will be a key part of how we assess your application. As well as demonstrating a good foundation in core industrial design skills, we are also looking to see a strong focus on process, design thinking, and ultimately how you make design decisions. This is an opportunity to give us insight into who you are as a designer.
Requirements
You must have the right to work in the UK at the time of application.
You should be currently in your second year of an industrial design or related degree and looking to undertake a placement year as part of your studies.
You must be able to travel to and attend our South London studio five days a week for the duration of the placement.
Core knowledge and skills
You should demonstrate a solid foundation in design, including sketching, 3D CAD, rendering and 2D presentation skills. An understanding of prototyping, materials and manufacturing, as well as CMF, will be important in supporting your ideas through development.
Tools and software
You should be comfortable using key design tools such as SolidWorks, KeyShot and the Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and Illustrator. Experience with 3D printing software and basic prototyping tools is also beneficial.
